There are plenty of positive reasons to make the move into the IT industry. Now, you may be keen to make this change but fearful due to your lack of experience in the industry.
If this is the case, we have 4 tips to help you find your way into the IT industry, even if you have zero experience.
1. Reflect On Any Past Experiences Associated With IT
Living in the age of technology means that we all have some kind of IT experience, even if its small and feels insignificant. Before you start applying for jobs, sit down with your CV and take a long hard look at any IT experience you may have. If you have ever worked with communication, customer service, Microsoft Office or Google Suite then these could be where you get your foot in the door. You will need these skills for a basic entry level IT desk job.
See where you can draw up an IT experienced-based CV and get to work on making it look lengthy and appealing. Also, don’t be ashamed of the fact that you have interest in changing careers, use this to your advantage with potential new employers. Write a cover letter for your CV explaining why you want to make the move into IT. This shows you are brave, courageous and passionate. These are all qualities any employer would admire.
2. Get Yourself Industry Certified
As much as past experience is useful when breaking in to any industry, nothing quite makes an employer interested in you like having industry certifications. A tech degree can take between 1 and 4 years to complete, so rather look at certifications that take a few weeks first.

3. Include All Your Degrees, Even If It Is In Another Industry

Even if your degree has nothing to do with IT, an employer will see your qualification and know that you had the discipline and commitment to attain that degree. This is a positive step in the right direction for you. Don’t be afraid to include any other degrees on your CV.
4. Put Your Pride Aside and Start At The Bottom
It’s important to remember that you may have to start with an entry-level position when you enter the industry. You are starting fresh and despite your age, experience or degrees in other industries, prepare yourself to start at the bottom and work your way up.
Don’t let your ego and pride tell you that you are better than that, remember you are making the change to the IT industry for a reason. So, if you need to take an entry level position for a few months or a year in order to get your foot in the door, then that is what you may have to do.
