Business Models for Artists and Graphic Designers

If you are a professional artist or graphic designer, then you know how hard it is to try and figure out your best business model. Most people don’t understand how you set your prices. There is a tremendous amount of skill and talent and background that goes into being an excellent graphic designer, and clients don’t want to pay you what you are worth.

Because of this, you have to think more extensively about your business models. Think about what you have to do if you have a screen printing company. What about online stores – can you make money that way? Perhaps a good source of income would be teaching lessons in art. And, the more credentials that you have and the more official your portfolio is, the more people are willing to spend on your time and your work.

Screen Printing

As an artist or graphic designer, you can turn your virtual or digital ideas into physical ones by running a screenprinting business. People are less likely to purchase designs in the digital atmosphere than they are to buy actual physical prints of something. And if people don’t want to pay for artwork on the walls necessarily, they will pay for that same artwork on T-shirts or other pieces of clothing.

Online Stores

Have you tried selling your art online? You can set up an eBay store as a good example of figuring out how marketable you are. As long as you understand how to present your artwork, how to describe it, and how to price it and ship it accordingly, it should be an excellent way for you to make some money. You can only make so much cash selling artwork to your friends and family or local stores – by going worldwide digitally, your opening up new avenues of income.

Teaching Lessons

You can also teach art lessons. It’s incredible how much money you can make if you have a few clients a week who want to learn how to be artistic. One person might only buy one piece of your art once. However, that same person may come back every week if you are teaching them how to create their own art. If you have regular clients that come into learn from you, that is a lucrative technique for earning from your talent.

Getting Credentials

You can make more money as an artist or graphic designer if you have credentials behind you. If you graduated from an art school that has a good brand behind it, use that to your advantage. If you’ve ever won any awards or worked for any major clients, keep that as part of your presentable portfolio, and you can charge more for your creations.
