5 Tips For Weathering a Heatwave

As temperatures are starting to rise all over the planet, many of us find ourselves struggling to stay cool. Unless you have an air conditioner, it can be a challenge to cool off, particularly in extremely hot destinations. To help you survive a heatwave, here are some of the best tips to stay cool and healthy.

Use Fans Wisely

Fans can be used to increase air circulation throughout your home. While it may seem logical to blow fans in every direction, experts recommend a bit more strategy. Place fans near open doors and windows to push the hot air out, and at night place fans facing the opposite direction to draw cool air in. The idea is to get as much air flowing as possible to create your own air circulation system.

Close Your Shutters

During peak daylight hours, it is recommended to keep your shutters entirely closed. The more darkness you have in the home, the less heat will make its way inside. In addition to your shutters, you should consider using blackout curtains to increase your home’s darkness even more. At night once the sun goes down, you can open all of your shutters and curtains to allow the cool air to circulate.

Drink Plenty of Water

It can’t be stressed enough how important it is to drink plenty of water during the warmer months. Keep several bottles of cold water in the fridge and make sure that you refill them regularly as you drink.

This is especially important for younger children and older adults who may be more susceptible to the hot weather. Rather than letting yourself get parched and chugging water all at once, it’s better to take small sips throughout the day.

Cool Down With Water

If you don’t have a swimming pool, then the next best thing is jumping into the shower when you start to feel yourself overheating. Cool yourself off with ice cold water, as needed. For pregnant women, this can be extremely helpful if you start to feel your feet swelling. In addition to cooling yourself off with showers, you might want to consider keeping a spray bottle in the fridge. Spritz yourself with a few cold sprays throughout the day and you’ll feel much more refreshed.

Wear Breathable Cotton

It’s important that you choose your clothing wisely. Wearing thick materials such as denim or thick cotton is a big heatwave no-no. Instead, wear light materials that make it easy for your skin to breathe and stay cool. The same goes for your shoes— instead of wearing thick socks and sneakers, opt for sandals that allow your feet to stay as cool as they can. Otherwise, if you’re at home, enjoy the freedom of wearing little to nothing at all to stay as cool as possible.
